The Two Witnesses |
All Christians I've heard from expect these two witnesses to preach a message to the sinners of the world that is just like the way that they believe Christianity to be. Therefore when the "inhabitants of the earth" rejoice at the deaths of the two witnesses (Rev. 11:10), Christians believe it will be because the world doesn't like the gospel message.
What if Christianity has gone a ways off the track since the apostles? If that is the case, the message of the two witnesses will not align with the center of Christian belief. Consider what would happen if their message was more like Protestantism than Catholicism or more like Calvinism, or Seventh Day Adventists or one of the Messianic churches.
The truth is that the churches are deeply divided on some fundamental beliefs and practices. The churches probably will not give those up easily if at all, It's very likely there would be no church that exactly matches the teaching of the two witnesses.
The result would be large numbers of Christians, perhaps even a vast majority, who despise the two witnesses and their message. Unlike now, with teachers we can ignore when we disagree with them, these two cannot be ignored. They will bring plagues, "as much as they wish."
We would find ourselves in a situation that we should recognize but wouldn't because the roles are reversed. At the time of Jesus we find that the vast majority of the religious elite despise him and his message. Most of the people follow along with that. In this time of the two witnesses, in the situation described, the vast majority of the religious elite would despise them and their message.
