As Jesus' ministry began, he mostly worked in the Galilee area and north of there. Therefore he came back to Capernaum once in a while and to his hometown of Nazareth. When he first returned to Nazareth he found rejection there as well.

And he came to Nazareth where he had been raised, and as he was accustomed, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of Isaiah the Prophet was given to him and Yeshua opened the scroll and he found the place where it is written: 18 "The Spirit of the lord Yahweh is upon me, and because of this he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor; he has sent me to heal broken hearts and to proclaim liberty to captives, vision to the blind, and to restore the crushed with forgiveness, 19 and to proclaim the acceptable era of the lord Yahweh."
20 And he rolled up the scroll and he gave it to the minister and he went and sat down, but all who were in the synagogue fixed their eyes upon him. 21 And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your ears." 22 And all of them were testifying to it, and they were amazed at the words of grace that came out of his mouth. And they were saying, "Is not this Yoseph's son?" 23 Yeshua said to them, "Doubtless you will say to me this proverb: 'Physician, heal yourself', and 'Everything that we are hearing that you have done in Kapernahum, do also here in your town.'"
24 But he said, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is not a Prophet who is received in his town. 25 For truly I say to you that many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah the Prophet, when the heavens were shut for three years and six months, and there was great hunger in all the land. 26 And Elijah was not sent to one of them except to Tsarepta of Tsidon unto a widow woman." 27 "And there were many lepers among Israel in the days of the Elisha the prophet and not one of them was purified except Naaman the Syrian." 28 And when they who were in the synagogue heard these things, they were all filled with rage. 29 And they arose and they thrust him outside of the city and they brought him unto the ridge of the mountain on which the city was built to cast him from the precipice. (Luke 4:16-29)

Jesus says that a prophet is not received in his own town. That would immediately be proven true in Nazareth as they try to kill him. The reasons they reject him would be the same as the reasons Jesus' own family had rejected him. They knew him too well; they knew his family. It had also been a very short time since they had seen Jesus and so the change was too quick for them.

We have to ask why these people, friends of Jesus and his family, are so angry that they want to kill him. They wanted him to do miracles to prove his claim to be the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy. Jesus has made it clear that he will not be performing any signs or healings in Nazareth. He says just like Elijah and Elisha their miracles were not for Israel but for people of other nations. So it isn't only that he won't perform miracles that gives them a reason to kill him. What offends them is that Jesus has announced himself to be the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy and that he is a prophet, and he has equated himself with Elijah and Elisha. That is too much for them.

Roughly a year later, Jesus would return to Nazareth. He would be rejected a second time. Pay special attention to what these verses say about his disciples though. They still remember what almost happened the last time he was in Nazareth.

And he went out from there and he came to the city, and his disciples were staying close to him. 2 And when it was the Sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue and many who heard were amazed and they were saying, "From where does this man have these things? What is this wisdom given to him that mighty works like these should be done by his hands?" 3 "Is this not the carpenter, son of Maryam and brother of Yaqob, and Yose and Yehudah and Shimeon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they were suspicious of him. 4 And Yeshua said to them, "There is no Prophet who is despised except in his city and among his kindred and in his house." 5 And he was not able to do one powerful work there but only laid his hands upon a few sick folks and healed them. 6 He was astonished at the lack of their faith and he was going around in the villages as he taught. (Mark 6:1-6)

Despite the time that has passed and despite the additional stories they must have heard about Jesus, they are still unable to believe in him. They still can't get past the idea that he used to live there. They could probably tell you the house where the family had lived. Jesus' sisters still live in Nazareth. They would have been married to men in Nazareth before Mary and Jesus' brothers moved to Capernaum.

We all have the special calling to be Christians. Some are also called to be ministers, missionaries, or other positions. Because of this expect friends to reject you … Over and over
