Ultimately Jesus would be rejected by his own people and killed by the priests. Their reasons for rejecting Jesus were quite different from those of his family and friends. One of the reasons they rejected Jesus was because he wasn't what they wanted him to be. Jesus refers to their desire for him to be what they wanted and to their frustration that he wasn't.
But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the street and calling their playmates, 17 and saying, 'We sang to you, and you did not dance, and we cried for you, and you were not sad.' (Matthew 11:16-17)
They were wanting someone who looked and acted like a king. Instead they got a servant, as it says in Isaiah 53.
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3 He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face he was despised, and we did not esteem Him. (Isaiah 53:2-3)
Jesus wasn't the king they were expecting and that caused problems for them. He was calling the people back to faith in God and people were listening to him. He was also teaching against the religious orders. This was upsetting the social order as the priests saw it. For this reason also they rejected him.
We all have the special calling to be Christians. Some are also called to be ministers, missionaries, or other positions. Because of this the world will expect us to look and behave according to their standards. If we don't they will reject us too.
